Lip Injections: The New Trend

You will see it everywhere – on television, in magazines, on social media – big lips are the new “thing”. Lip injections have taken over mainstream media by storm, makeup companies have released lip gloss that promise to show the same results as cosmetic lip injections, celebrities and influences have made big lips their brand… But what exactly are lip injections?

The New Trend

The first attempt of lip injections dates to the early 1900’s, but in the past decade the procedure has become a huge trend around the world. Lip injections are a dermal filler that is injected into your lips to augment their appearance. The most common dermal filler used to be a collagen solution but has recently evolved to hyaluronic acid because it is safer and the effects last longer.

The hyaluronic acid fillers are injected to the lips to add shape, structure, and volume. Hyaluronic acid injections alleviate the amount of bruising caused, allow any bumps that may form to dissolve, and provide lasting results. You should know that lip injections are not permanent, but the results usually last around six months.

What Are the Side Effects?

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some side effects that you should be aware of. The first thing that comes to most people’s minds is bruising. Bruising can occur, but hyaluronic acid fillers have decreased the occurrence compared to collagen. You should refrain from taking any medications or supplements that act as blood thinners for about a week before the treatment because they can increase your chance of bruising.

What about allergic reactions? Again, hyaluronic acid has decreased the chance of allergic reaction because it mimics substances that are already in your body – decreasing the chance of a negative reaction. Of course, you should always air on the side of caution and discuss with your cosmetic doctor the possible outcomes.

If you end up not liking the results of your lip injections, you can return to the cosmetic practice to have them dissolved. Bear in mind that lip injections sometimes require a gradual progression and often take more than one round to see the results you want. Everyone’s body reacts differently, and you might not get the Instagram look straight off the bat.

The Bottom Line

If done correctly, lip injections are a non-invasive, seamless procedure that can reward you with beautiful results. The results are not permanent, so be aware that it is a commitment to maintain the look.
