Following a mastectomy, or in some circumstances other injury or post-operative complication, nipple reconstruction is sometimes desired to restore a more natural look to the breast. There are multiple techniques available for creating the illusion of a nipple when one no longer exists. This includes surgical creating a three dimensional nipple with projection from the breast mound. This in combination with specialized tattooing can achieve a very realistic reconstructed nipple. If you desire a recreated nipple, you should consider treatment. It is vital that you have realistic expectations and a positive outlook. Achieving a surgical nipple reconstruction is impossible without a few scars. Most patients feel the scars are well worth the benefits of surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Once the decision is made to move forward with surgery, our team will schedule a pre-procedure visit and help you select your surgery date. A nipple reconstruction may be performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep for the operation, or may be performed under local anesthesia, meaning the area being treated is numbed. Surgery time varies depending on the treatment. You will go home the same day as surgery to recover. We recommend you plan for extra help around the house for the days following your procedure as you adjust and recover. Recovery for each patient varies and depends on your lifestyle.
