What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a process by which we remove fat from certain areas of the body. Typically, we remove this fat from the hips, butt, arms, thighs, and abdomen. Liposuction may even be used to facilitate a breast reduction. However, other areas of the body may have sufficient fat accumulation to treat as well (ankles, calves, neck etc.). It is important to remember that while we are removing fat, it is more for the sake of contouring the body rather than weight loss.
Who Should Get Lipo?
Liposuction may be a good option for those looking to remove small to moderate accumulations of fat. The ideal patient will have elastic skin that molds to the new body shape. Inelastic skin often leads to less than desirable results. If we are only removing a small amount of fat, liposuction is often done in the office. However, larger procedures may require a surgery center or hospital stay.
Recovery takes between a few weeks and a few months. Most patients are sore for a few days following the procedure, but are able to resume light activities. Drainage from the small incisions usually resolves within 72 hours of the procedure. Within four to six months, most patients will see excellent results as the skin begins to tighten. That said, maintaining a relatively consistent weight is critical to keeping the cosmetic results of liposuction intact longer-term.
